Alison’s journal entry from her visit to Yakanarra:

I have just returned from spending the past 2 weeks in Western Australia working with schools, which are part of AISWA(Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia). Yakanarra is nestled between the Great Sandy Desert and the St. Georges Ranges. We had to fly on a small charter plane from Broom.

Me and Patricia in Kurrawang

I spent the week at Yakanara working with the students, adults and teachers making books based on their stories. We made 2 books; ‘Yakanara Day’ and ‘Yakanarra Dogs’. My friend Maree worked with the students to make a big mosaic mural.

The community was great and everyone was so friendly. Malcom took us for a drive to the flood plains where we saw Brolgas, Bush turkeys and Scrub Bulls. I was lucky enough to play basketball with the women and girls and then we watched to local footy team, the Yakanarra Dockers train!

In collaboration with The National Library of Australia Alison’s tour will continue throughout the week with special Laureate events: Whole School Read Aloud at Turner Primary School’s Indigenous Reconciliation Garden; a family focused Author Talk at Woden Library and ‘This is My Place’ workshops with Theodore and St. Jude’s Primary Schools.
