Libraries: bringing communities together

The Australian Children's Laureate and the ACLF are committed to encouraging children to join public and school libraries so they can access the broad range of stories and information they need to develop into strong readers.

Wallsend P.S. is a learning community that is growing in their love and respect for books. We have 260 primary aged students. The library has forward facing shelves for most of the collection. This has gone a long way towards helping students with their book selection. Most students borrow regularly with either using a library bag to take the book home or having a school loan and reading it at school and caring for it on their desk. We have separate Premier’s Reading Challenge sections to help students choose quality books to complete this challenge.

The two branches of the Holdfast Bay Library Service are located close to the beach in the Adelaide suburbs of Glenelg and Brighton.

The Glenelg branch caters to a wide variety of patrons (especially during the busy Summer tourist season – pre-Covid!) and has a direct tram link to the City.

Our Brighton branch is visited by a large number of both older patrons and young families. We have good links with neighbouring schools and child care centres with which we offer a number of author events and other library programs.
